As I started to pen the beginnings of the manuscript, I was focusing on Rachel’s tears. It’s the most well-known thing about this character, referenced not only in the Old but the New Testament as well.
Then one day, while washing dishes – for writer-moms, really, one of the best times to think and reflect – I was listening to my kids talking and laughing about something.
I smiled at the sound. Just the fact of them getting along, doing an activity together.
The thought was both happy and poignant. It filled me with both joy and a little bit of sorrow.
You see, right now is kind of a scary time for me. Our oldest child, Jessica, is sixteen and she’s a senior in high school. I was really into early childhood education and taught her to read at two. She just took off from there.
For years, I realized she would graduate younger than her peers, and assumed she would stay at home, maybe take some college courses nearby, maybe get a job … eventually work toward figuring out what she wants to do … all while safely at home.
